Fine, Ph.D., was jailed after he attempted to disqualify Superior Court Judge David Yaffe from sitting on a case where he had admitted receiving illegal payments from a party to the case before him. The Judge ordered him to an "indefinite" sentence for Civil Contempt of Court. U.S. Supreme Court precedent cases have held that civil contempt sentences are limited to five days, but Richard Fine was released after eighteen months in solitary "coercive confinement" in L .A. County Men's Central Jail.
