High School Junior Presents IVF Research at ASRM 2026 Under Mentorship of Stanford Professor

Jeffrey Huang, a Grade 11 student at Taipei American School, collaborates with internationally renowned Stanford IVF scientist Dr. Barry Behr on a multinational study exploring the relationship between air pollution and fertility treatment outcomes across 27 European countries.

BALTIMORE and SAN JOSE, Calif. and PALO ALTO, Calif., Nov. 2, 2026 /PRNewswire/ -- Jeffrey Zi Kang Huang, a research intern with Taiwan IVF Group and Ton-Yen General Hospital and a Grade 11 student at Taipei American School (TAS) with a growing passion for medicine and biomedical research, presented his scientific research at the 2026 American Society for Reproductive Medicine (ASRM) Scientific Congress & Expo in Baltimore, Maryland. Under the mentorship of Barry Behr, PhD, HCLD, Professor Emeritus of Obstetrics and Gynecology at Stanford University School of Medicine and Interim Director of Stanford's IVF Laboratory, Jeffrey served as first author and presenter of a multinational study exploring the potential relationship between environmental air pollution and in vitro fertilization (IVF) outcomes.

The research, titled "Ambient Air Pollution and IVF Outcomes in Europe: A Multinational Registry Analysis of PM2.5 Exposure," was presented on October 26, 2026, as a scientific poster at ASRM, one of the world's leading international conferences in reproductive medicine.

For Jeffrey, the opportunity to present research alongside established scientists represents a meaningful step toward his aspiration to pursue a future in medicine and biomedical science.

A Young Researcher Exploring Important Questions in Reproductive Medicine

Driven by his curiosity about the intersection of environmental science and human health, Jeffrey investigated whether exposure to air pollution might be associated with fertility treatment outcomes.

The study examined IVF outcomes across 27 European countries, drawing on reproductive treatment data from the European Society of Human Reproduction and Embryology (ESHRE) and environmental air pollution estimates from the World Bank.

The analysis identified a trend toward lower IVF clinical pregnancy and delivery rates in countries with higher exposure to fine particulate air pollution (PM2.5). For every 5 µg/m³ increase in PM2.5 exposure, the researchers observed a 2.39-percentage-point decrease in delivery rates and a 1.91-percentage-point decrease in clinical pregnancy rates.

Although these associations were not statistically conclusive, the findings highlight a potential relationship worthy of further investigation and raise important questions about the role environmental factors may play in reproductive health. The country-level analysis does not establish a causal relationship.

Jeffrey began participating in reproductive medicine research in August 2025 as a research intern with Taiwan IVF Group and Ton Yen General Hospital, working alongside an international team of researchers under Dr. Behr's mentorship.

While continuing his studies at Taipei American School, Jeffrey has pursued his interests in medicine, biomedical science, and environmental health through research projects that connect scientific concepts with real-world medical questions.

His experience has allowed him to explore how scientific investigations are developed, how complex datasets are analyzed, and how research findings are communicated within the international academic community.

In addition to his conference presentation, Jeffrey authored an article titled "The Impact of Air Pollution on Fertility Treatment Outcomes," published on October 12, 2026, in BioNews, a publication of the United Kingdom's Progress Educational Trust.

Presenting at ASRM 2026 offered Jeffrey an opportunity to engage with reproductive medicine specialists, clinical embryologists, and researchers from around the world, broadening his understanding of scientific research and its potential impact on patient care.
