Highmark Health appoints Karen Hanlon chief operating officer as part of leadership change to support organization's value-based care model
PITTSBURGH, July 30, 2018 /PRNewswire/ -- Highmark Health today announced that Karen Hanlon, who joined the organization in 1997 and has served as executive vice president and chief financial officer since 2014, has been named to the newly created position of chief operating officer (COO). Hanlon will continue to serve as chief financial officer and treasurer during a national search for her replacement.
In this expanded role, Hanlon will add oversight for HM Health Solutions and Highmark Health Analytics and Informatics to her current responsibilities, which include Gateway Health and the Penn State Health alliance, which was formed in 2017. She will succeed David Holmberg as chairman of the board of HM Health Solutions.
As part of the company's growth strategy and mission to deliver comprehensive, affordable, high quality health care services to its customers and the communities it serves, the organization also announced that with the creation of the new COO position, Matt Ray, who will continue in his current role as president of HM Health Solutions, and Bob Gladden, vice president of Highmark Health Analytics and Informatics, will now report to Hanlon.

Hanlon began her career in public accounting at KPMG Peat Marwick and since joining Highmark, she has held several positions within the finance division. Hanlon has been a member of the Pennsylvania Institute of Certified Public Accountants for over 15 years and currently serves on the board of directors of Penn State Health to provide guidance on the collaboration between Highmark Health and Penn State Health announced in 2017. She was also a member of the board of directors of Leadership Pittsburgh and Big Brothers Big Sisters of Southwest PA, where she also served as treasurer. Hanlon holds a Bachelor of Arts in accounting from Grove City College and is a certified public accountant in Pennsylvania.
These changes are effective immediately and Hanlon will continue to report directly to Holmberg.
