HOUSTON, Dec. 22, 2015 /PRNewswire/ -- On Dec. 17, Volkswagen announced the hiring of famed claims administrator Kenneth Feinberg to set up a compensation fund for an estimated 500,000 diesel-car owners. Feinberg confirmed that Volkswagen reached out to him to set up the program in an effort to divert claims out of the court system and into a claims program that will provide remedies to VW automobile owners. This announcement follows the Volkswagen goodwill offer, offered to affected car owners.
A week earlier the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of California was selected to handle the consolidation of lawsuits from across the country, stating the federal court will serve "the convenience of the parties and witnesses and promote the just and efficient conduct of the litigation."
It has been about three months since VW admitted that 11 million cars had a "defeat device" designed to cheat emissions tests, including 482,000 vehicles in the United States.
"While this is a good sign for claimants, VW must understand that there will be no discount on these cases, only finality and closure for consumers who are fully compensated," said Robert Hilliard, an attorney representing a large number of VW owners.
