Hispanic National Bar Association Invites Law Students to Participate in its 17th Annual Uvaldo Herrera National Moot Court Competition

WASHINGTON, Jan. 13, 2012 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- The Hispanic National Bar Association (HNBA) announced today that the registration deadline for its prestigious Annual Uvaldo Herrera National Moot Court Competition has been extended until Friday, January 20, 2012. Registration is available online at www.hnba.com.

Now in its seventeenth year, the Uvaldo Herrera National Moot Court Competition provides the opportunity for students from law schools across the country to brief and argue a case pending before the U.S. Supreme Court before panels of distinguished federal and state court judges, as well as experienced attorneys and law professors.

The Moot Court Competition also provides students with invaluable networking opportunities with the several hundred attendees at the Midyear Conference, including judges, professors, in house and outside counsel, and other professionals. Participation is limited to the first 32 two-student teams to register. As in past years, the winning team will receive a significant scholarship, and scholarships for the "best oralist" and "best brief" will also be awarded.

The Moot Court Competition will take place during the HNBA's Annual Midyear Corporate Counsel Conference, which is scheduled for March 28-31, 2012, and will take place at the Westin Newport in Jersey City, New Jersey. This year, students will write briefs and present oral argument on a case based on the pending Supreme Court case of United States v. Jones. Students will brief and argue the propriety of the warrantless use of GPS devices by law enforcement to track suspects. The issue is complex and nuanced and requires an analysis of the Fourth Amendment's "search and seizure" provision. The moot court problem was prepared by top appellate practitioners from the Gibson Dunn LLP law firm in Washington, D.C.

Quarter- and semi-finals rounds of the Moot Court Competition are scheduled to take place at the historic Hudson County Courthouse in Jersey City, New Jersey, and the final rounds will be held at the United States District Courthouse in Newark, New Jersey.
