Holcim North America Recognized by Slag Cement Association for Advancing Sustainable Construction in Three Projects

• Projects ranging from a WNBA practice facility to highway infrastructure showcase Holcim's leadership in advancing sustainable concrete practices.

CHICAGO, April 3, 2025 /PRNewswire/ -- Holcim North America, a leader in innovative and sustainable building solutions, was recognized in the 2024 Slag Cement in Sustainable Concrete Awards by the Slag Cement Association (SCA). Holcim was named a winner for three different projects within the categories of Lower Carbon Concrete and Durability. The awards ceremony took place on April 2, 2025, in Toronto, ON.

Holcim's three projects that were awarded by SCA demonstrate how its innovative mix is making an impact across North America for a variety of purposes:

• The Seattle Storm Center for Basketball Performance: Holcim was awarded in the Lower Carbon Concrete category for its role in the construction of the dedicated practice facility for the WNBA's Seattle Storm. Collaborating with Stoneway Concrete and Sellen Construction, Holcim used its supplementary cementitious material, slag, which led to a 40% reduction in carbon emissions compared to regional averages. The project also met 80% of the targeted reductions outlined by the First Movers Coalition for Concrete by 2030.
• Concrete Pavement Intersection for Middle Road and Hanover Street along Route 1 in Newbury MA MASS DOT: Holcim was awarded in the Durability category for its role in Massachusetts' first concrete paving project in 50 years, setting a precedent for future projects. The slag cement aided in compressive strengths, durability, color and lightness of the concrete, with a projected life of service exceeding 75 years.
• Use of Innovative Sustainable and Durable Materials in Concrete Pavements: Holcim was awarded in the Lower Carbon Concrete category for its role in the Minnesota Department of Transportation (MnDOT)'s slag cement study on Interstate 94. The project evaluated four slag-based cement systems, demonstrating their performance and clinker reduction potential.

Since 2010, the SCA has recognized excellence in sustainable concrete construction using slag cement.
