STAMFORD, Conn., Oct. 11, 2016 /PRNewswire/ -- A team of Team Rubicon United Kingdom disaster response experts deployed to Les Cayes, Haiti over the weekend to assist partner Hope for Haiti. The situation is dire, "three out of every five houses were destroyed," noted volunteer Mike Stewart, who led the initial rapid needs assessment. Team Rubicon UK, supported by Team Rubicon Global and partner countries, committed to a minimum three-week operation with a team of twelve military veterans and first responders with the mission of clearing transport routes, managing debris, and repairing damaged homes and schools at Hope for Haiti partner sites. In coordination with Hope for Haiti, they will work closely with Government and Non-profit organization partners in Port-au-Prince and assist in re-establishing access to those communities isolated from receiving aid.
The current death toll in Haiti is 900 and rising, with concerns of massive casualties due to the proliferation of secondary medical conditions, such as cholera, infection and/or tetanus. Haitian Government and United Nations officials estimate that some 350,000 people need immediate assistance. The Hope for Haiti team remains dedicated to working with partners and local government officials in Les Cayes and surrounding areas to address the immediate needs of that vulnerable population.
To help save as many lives as possible, the below are critical:
- Monetary: Cash donations to allow for immediate local purchases and emergency operations to speed recovery.
- Transportation: Air transport from US to Haiti (cargo and passenger flights), Air transport between Port-au-Prince and Les Cayes (helicopters, planes) to transport emergency personnel and disaster relief supplies, and Vehicles for ground transportation in Haiti.
- Survival: Food/clean water (water purification)
- Shelter: Tarps/Sheet Metal Roofing/Tents
- Power: Batteries, Generators, Flashlights, Solar lamps, fuel (diesel)
- Health: Medications & First Aid supplies
- Access: Power tools, chain saws, axes to clear roads and move debris
