Hopkins County, Ky. Elementary Schools Using McGraw-Hill's Everyday Mathematics® Top District Math Competition

MADISONVILLE, Ky., July 8 /PRNewswire/ -- In a recent Hopkins County, Kentucky, fifth grade mathematics competition, the schools receiving the top three prizes and top five scores overall used McGraw-Hill's Everyday Mathematics® program, a structured, rigorous and research-based Pre-K–6 curriculum developed by the University of Chicago School Mathematics Project that helps students learn mathematical reasoning and develop strong math skills.

The program's hands-on approach, which focuses on using a student's own experiences, real-life examples and games, teaches basic skills as well as conceptual thinking.  It is the nation's most popular elementary math program, used by more than 4 million students nationwide.

"It is a striking but not surprising connection that all five top scorers in our math contest use Everyday Mathematics in their classrooms," said Twila Moore, district mathematics coordinator for Hopkins County Schools.  "Everyday Mathematics actively engages students as they learn math and has resulted in solid performance and progress in math across the district."

The competition invited teams of fifth graders from Hopkins County elementary schools to compete against other teams of fifth graders representing each elementary school in the district and surrounding districts.  Each team comprised five students who participated in a timed, one-hour booklet form test including 40 math problems.  Winners were chosen based on the most problems correct per team and per student.  The top three students from each school were awarded a certificate, with trophies awarded to the top five highest-scoring students and the top three schools overall.

The annual event is held by the Madisonville Community College department of mathematics.  Those instructors generated questions that were rigorous and covered all strands of mathematics.   Dawn Chumley, mathematics instructor at MCC, said that this year's test was more difficult and rigorous than previous tests.  Earlier tests had students scoring 30+ out of 40 questions.  Therefore, this year's test was "amped up" to help realize the real potential of the students.
