Neonatal pulse oximetry screening has become an import test care providers can use to screen for critical congenital heart defects (CCHDs).  According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), approximately 4,800 babies are born in the United States every year that have one of seven different CCHDs.  Critical congenital heart defects account for nearly 3% of infant mortality during the first year of life and affects between seven and nine of every 1000 newborns.  Detecting CCHDs early and implementing surgical correction can be lifesaving and can prevent or limit brain damage.  United States Health and Human Services Secretary, Kathleen Sebelius, acknowledged the importance of infant pulse oximetry screening when she endorsed adding the screening for CCHDs to the Uniform Screening Panel in September of 2011.
