Horizon Lines Honored with Environmental Excellence Recognition by the Chamber of Shipping of America

CHARLOTTE, N.C., Dec. 2, 2010 /PRNewswire/ -- Horizon Lines, Inc. (NYSE: HRZ), the leading U.S. domestic ocean shipping and integrated logistics company, has been recognized for outstanding achievements in environmental excellence by the Chamber of Shipping of America (CSA) at a dinner ceremony in Washington, D.C.

With a combined total of 76 consecutive years of operation without any environmental incidents, 12 Horizon Lines vessels were recognized for environmental achievement: Anchorage (4); Eagle (3); Enterprise (20); Hawk (3); Hunter (3); Kodiak (9); Pacific (10); Producer (7); Reliance (9); Spirit (3); Tacoma (3); Tiger (2). Maritime Administrator, David T. Matsuda, and Rear Admiral Brian Salerno, Deputy Commandant for Operations, U.S. Coast Guard participated in the award ceremony.

The awards are open to all owners and operators of vessels that operate on oceans or inland waterways.

Horizon Lines was recognized twice earlier this year for deploying green strategies in their operations. In November, Supply & Demand Chain Executive magazine presented the company with a 2010 Green Supply Chain Award, which honors companies that are making sustainability a core part of their supply chain strategies. In June, Horizon Lines was named a Top 50 Green Supply Chain Partner by Inbound Logistics magazine for the company's environment initiatives, which include reducing empty backhaul miles through logistics network optimization, reducing fossil fuel consumption, and using recycled materials to build containers.
