Hotwire Reveals Canadian Hotel Rate Report for December 2010
Halifax Prices Continue to Drop for the Eighth Consecutive Month as Kelowna Makes Its 2010 Debut
SAN FRANCISCO, Dec. 22, 2010 /PRNewswire/ -- Hotwire.com®, a leading discount travel site, today announced the results of the December 2010 Hotwire® Canadian Hotel Rate Report, which features the top five cities in Canada where hotel rates have dropped the most. When combined with Hotwire's already discounted prices, the Hotel Rate Report helps guide customers to the destinations that can maximize their travel dollars.
Halifax, Nova Scotia tops this month's report again with a nine percent drop. Those looking for an escape from the extreme snow and wind found in most areas of Canada should head to this capital city, where the average minimum temperature is only -7 degrees C during the month of December.
While locations such as Toronto and Niagara Falls are seeing price increases, other Ontario cities like London and Ottawa have seen decreases of four and one percent decrease instead, respectively. Meanwhile, Kelowna, a city known for having the greatest percentage of "calm" winds in Canada, made its 2010 debut this year with a two percent decrease.
After a two month hiatus due to a strong convention season in the fall, Calgary is back on the list. Many Calgary hotels have been dropping prices to entice more leisure travelers to fill the voids left by the end of convention season. This is great news for those who enjoy outdoor sporting activities such as ice skating, skiing and tubing. Travelers should look for the best deals during the weekdays because weekend stays can be filled with holiday shoppers eager to find good bargains in the local shops.
Hotwire is able to find great deals because it works with hotels, airlines and car rental companies to fill unsold inventory. This means that customers can find incredibly low deals on Hotwire, especially in cities like those on the Hotel Rate Report where prices are unseasonably low.
When compared to the same time last year, the top five hotel price reductions for December 2010 include:

"During the winter months, many cities across Canada begin to drop hotel prices, but this year there are several dropping them even more than normal," said Clem Bason, President of the Hotwire Group. "As we head into the new year, consumers should take advantage of the low prices being offered in fun, winter retreat cities like Halifax and Calgary before they run out."
About the Hotwire Hotel Rate Report
The Hotwire Hotel Rate Report will run results during the first week of each month. Results are calculated by looking at Hotwire stay dates for select regions in the current month, and comparing prices in the current month against Hotwire prices in the same month in the prior year. Prices are compared within the same star rating categories for consistency, and the percent change in price for each region is generated as an overall average of the changes in those categories. The prices in the chart above are examples for a particular star rating category within that market, and actual prices may be higher or lower than the example that is provided.
