Houston Methodist Orthopedics & Sports Medicine Hosts Community Joint Replacement Seminar, Attendees Meet Joint Care Team

HOUSTON, Nov. 15, 2013 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- More than 130 people attended a recent Dine and Learn event hosted by Houston Methodist Orthopedics & Sports Medicine and the Houston Methodist Willowbrook Hospital.  The free community event featured an informative presentation on hip and knee replacement.

Presented by Daniel Le, M.D., a fellowship-trained orthopedic surgeon and newest member of Houston Methodist Orthopedics & Sports Medicine, attendees learned about the latest advancements in joint replacement surgery helping them live fuller, more active lives.

Tamy Arnett, PT, manager of the Houston Methodist Willowbrook Center for Rehabilitation, also introduced the audience to the hospital's Joint Camp program. She spoke about the service, which is provided for patients scheduled to undergo joint surgery at Houston Methodist Willowbrook Hospital.

"Joint camp gives the patient advance knowledge in their recovery process. The opportunity to meet with nursing, physical therapy and pharmacist prior to surgery is crucial to a confident and expedient recovery," said Arnett.

According to Dr. Le, education is key to a successful recovery in any treatment plan - particularly joint replacement. Working collaboratively with the pain management and rehabilitation teams, he and his orthopedic colleagues work closely to ensure the best possible outcome.

Dr. Le has performed over 1000 joint replacement surgeries and has advanced training and experience in a wide range of joint procedures, including minimally invasive hip replacement, primary joint replacement and complex revision replacement. He also has extensive experience managing bone fractures around implants and alternative treatments for other joint conditions. His research interests include advanced hip socket positioning techniques and minimally invasive hip replacement surgery.

Joint Camp is a one-time, two-hour class that gives patients the opportunity to meet with a nurse coordinator, physical therapist and pharmacist to get necessary information for a safe and successful surgical outcome, hospitalization and recovery. Additional topics covered during the class include walking with assistive devices, home safety, adaptive equipment and discharge planning. Patients also receive an easy-to-follow guide containing all the information needed prior to surgery and through recovery.
