Houston Methodist Orthopedics & Sports Medicine Partners with Klein ISD Athletics, Providing Athletes and Coaches with Comprehensive Care and Coverage

HOUSTON, April 16, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- Houston Methodist Orthopedics & Sports Medicine located on the Houston Methodist Willowbrook Hospital campus partners with Klein Independent School District (Klein ISD) Athletics in an agreement that will prove a win-win for the Northwest Houston community.

The partnership provides team doctors and consultative, educational and specialized sports health services to the Klein ISD Athletics program.  The elite team of orthopedic surgeons, sports medicine specialists and primary care sports medicine physicians of Houston Methodist Orthopedics & Sports Medicine, already serving families throughout the community, now provide comprehensive sports medicine resources to the young athletes involved in Klein ISD athletic programs.

According to Dr. Christian Schupp, Primary Care Sports Medicine (PCSM) specialist and a member of the sports medicine faculty for the Houston Methodist PCSM Fellowship program, the agreement provides Klein ISD athletic trainers and coaches with staff development training that focuses on concussion training, weather related illnesses and injury treatment. A member of the medical staff will also serve on the concussion medical board and provide medical consultation for the Klein ISD Athletics Department.

The agreement will also provide Klein ISD students entering high school and participating in football, basketball and soccer with baseline ImPACT Concussion testing, (neuropsychological testing providing comparative data specific to each athlete), as well as ongoing concussion management.

"We have for years provided support to young athletes with our Saturday Sports Injury Clinics and School Sports Physicals, to ensure safety in sports and early detection of an injury before it progresses to something more serious. We hope through this partnership with Klein ISD Athletics to reduce the number of preventable injuries and concussions by working closely with coaches and the athletic support staff - through inservice educational seminars, resources and sideline support," said Dr. Schupp, who is the author of a recently published article on the sideline management of young athletes in Current Sports Medicine Reports.
