HSS Draws Five New Nationally Distinguished Physicians

NEW YORK, March 9, 2017 /PRNewswire/ -- Hospital for Special Surgery (HSS) today announced the arrival of five prominent physicians—two chiefs of services and three orthopedic surgeons. Specializing in pathology, pediatric rheumatology, spine, hand and upper extremity, and adult reconstruction and joint replacement, the new Physicians expand the Hospital's commitment to delivering high quality care and outcomes to patients.

New appointments include: Thomas Bauer, MD, PhD; Karen Onel, MD; Daniel Osei, MD, MSc; Sheeraz A. Qureshi, MD, MBA; and Jose Rodriguez, MD.

Dr. Thomas Bauer joins HSS as incoming Pathologist-in-Chief, effective April 19. Dr. Bauer is coming from Cleveland Clinic where he practiced in the anatomic pathology department since 1983. He earned his medical and doctorate degrees at the University of Nebraska before completing his residency at The Johns Hopkins Hospital.

Dr. Karen Onel returned to HSS on December 1, 2016, as chief of Pediatric Rheumatology. Dr. Onel had completed her fellowship at HSS after receiving her medical degree from Cornell. She moved to the Midwest to practice at University of Chicago for 12 years before returning to New York late last year.

Dr. Daniel Osei returns to HSS as a hand and upper extremity surgeon, effective May 1. Dr. Osei comes from Washington University in St. Louis where he practiced hand surgery since 2012. He earned his medical degree at University of Pennsylvania before completing his residency at HSS. Dr. Osei specializes in microvascular reconstruction.

Dr. Sheeraz Qureshi is a minimally invasive spine surgeon who comes to HSS from Mount Sinai, starting April 1. Dr. Qureshi received his master and medical degrees at Tufts University before completing his residency at Mount Sinai. He will see patients both in Manhattan and at the HSS Outpatient Center in Paramus, New Jersey. 

Dr. Jose Rodriguez returns to HSS as an adult reconstruction and joint replacement surgeon beginning April 3. Coming from Lenox Hill Hospital, Dr. Rodriguez specializes in the treatment of traumatic and developmental conditions of the hip and knee. Dr. Rodriguez earned his medical degree at Columbia University and completed his residency at HSS.
