Hurricane Sandy Not from Human-Caused Climate Change, Doctors Say

TUCSON, Ariz., Nov. 5, 2012 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- As millions in the Northeast suffer from the lack of water, heat, and electricity, climate change alarmists are quick to suggest that humanity's "carbon footprint" is somehow to blame for the devastation.

Physicians for Civil Defense states: "The lesson from this hurricane is that we need better disaster preparedness, not less use of coal and oil."

Historical records show that worse hurricanes have occurred before, but did less damage because there were fewer human homes and businesses in the path of the storm surge. In its 2011 New England Hurricane Awareness Project, PCD reminded people about the 1938 Great New England Hurricane, also known as the Long Island Express.

People forget history, and rebuild in the same locations where structures were previously washed away.

Even people whose homes were undamaged have no food, water, spare batteries, or sources of light because people assume that stores will be open or government will bring them what they need. "We hope people will learn to stock up on supplies to tide them over next time, and to allow them to help their neighbors," stated PCD president Jane M. Orient, M.D.

"The shutdown of the economy does not have a silver lining," she added, referring to a recent statement by incumbent Missouri Senator Claire McCaskill. McCaskill stated that the good news about the recession is that carbon emissions are way down, along with manufacturing and jobs. By this logic, Hurricane Sandy is also good news.

"We need a more robust electricity grid," states Dr. Orient. "We need an increase in reliable electrical generating capacity, as from coal-fired, natural gas, and nuclear power plants."

"The effects of being without electricity, as hurricane victims are now experiencing, should show the folly of deliberate destruction of coal-fired plants, as would result from EPA regulations now being written," she notes.

"Promoters of the hype about global warming/climate change/extreme weather events suggest that we could keep hurricanes from happening. That is nonsense. We can, however, cripple our economy without the aid of a hurricane."
