Hyundai Hope On Wheels Announces Expansion Of Its Pediatric Cancer Research Grant - The Hyundai Quantum And Hyundai Quantum Collaboration Awards

FOUNTAIN VALLEY, Calif., Aug. 2, 2017 /PRNewswire/ -- Hyundai Hope On Wheels® today announced the expansion of its Hyundai Quantum Award grant program, which is aimed at increasing the scientific understanding of pediatric cancers with poor prognosis and outcomes.

This year, Hope On Wheels has committed $3 million to fund three (3) Hyundai Quantum Awards in the amount of $1 million each. The organization has announced it will add a new category - The Hyundai Quantum Collaboration Award, which will include one (1) in the amount of $2.5 million. The Quantum Collaboration Award is added to encourage collaboration between two or more pediatric cancer institutions in hopes of having a greater impact on the field of study.

"The cure rate for pediatric cancer is 80 percent, and we are proud to support the ongoing progress that doctors and researchers nationwide have made since Hyundai joined the fight 19 years ago," said Scott Fink, chairman, Hyundai Hope On Wheels Board of Directors. "However, for many pediatric cancers, there remain poor prognosis and outcomes, and research understanding of these cancers is limited. Given recent advancement in technology and therapeutic option, we hope the Hyundai Quantum and Hyundai Collaboration Awards, will aid the field to make major leaps and to better treat options and ultimately cures to these high-risk cancers."

The Hyundai Quantum and The Hyundai Quantum Collaboration Awards are focused on research with four specific pediatric cancer types: 1) central nervous system (CNS) tumors, 2) metastatic pediatric solid tumors, 3) pediatric myeloid leukemia's and 4) pediatric osteosarcomas. The goal is to pursue innovative research that is translational in nature, and that has the potential to impact childhood cancer diagnosis and treatment. Children's Oncology Group (COG) member-institutions are invited to submit a proposal for consideration for one of these grant categories. Selected proposals will be peer reviewed by a committee of leading pediatric cancer oncologist. The Hyundai Hope On Wheels program has supported pediatric cancer research in the U.S. since 1998. A leading group of pediatric oncologists makes up the organization's Medical Advisory Committee and assist in the peer-review vetting of grant proposals. Dr. David Poplack, director, Texas Children's Cancer Center at Texas Children's Hospital, and member of the HHOW Medical Advisory Committee says, "The Hyundai Quantum and Hyundai Quantum Collaboration Awards are exciting to the field at this critical time. Hope On Wheels distributed a request for proposal (RFP) to eligible Children's Oncology Group (COG) member institutions nationwide and is now accepting letters of intent (LOI). LOIs are due by Friday, September 1, 2017. Hyundai Quantum and Hyundai Quantum Collaboration Award winners will be publicly announced on March 29, 2018 during the annual HHOW program launch in New York City.
