Iberdrola USA Foundation Helps Preserve Portland Wilderness
13 acre property now part of Portland, Maine Parks Network
NEW GLOUCESTER, Maine, Jan. 7, 2013 /PRNewswire/ -- The Iberdrola USA Foundation, Inc. recently helped The Trust for Public Land acquire the so called "Canco Woods" in the City of Portland, Maine for use as a public park. The Foundation, which had recently acquired title to the 13 acre woodland, reduced its price to make the final sale and preservation of the urban forest possible.
The Trust for Public Land subsequently conveyed the property to the City of Portland which plans to add the land to its larger system of parks and walking trails.
A Legacy of Protecting the Environment
The Union Water Power Company, a subsidiary of Iberdrola USA, put the light-industrial zoned parcel up for sale in the spring of 2012. That listing generated interest from several groups which had been formed specifically to raise funds and acquire the property. Union Water Power then donated the property to the Iberdrola USA Foundation.
After fund-raising efforts came up short, The Foundation reduced the asking price of the property to $300,000 and finalized the sale. "Preserving this property fits our mission exactly and continues Iberdrola's long legacy of protecting the environment," said Bob Kump, chairman of the Iberdrola USA Foundation and CEO of Iberdrola USA. "In the end, we were very pleased to help the City keep this small island of wilderness available for all the people of Portland."
