After 59 Days on Picket Line, Workers Overwhelmingly Ratify New Three-Year Agreement
JOLIET, Ill., Oct. 21, 2026 /PRNewswire/ -- After eight weeks on strike, IKEA workers represented by Teamsters Local 179 have overwhelmingly ratified a strong first collective bargaining agreement. The three-year contract covers 190 workers, delivering a 12 percent wage increase, enhanced grievance procedures, and improved working conditions.
The workers at IKEA's distribution center in Joliet voted overwhelmingly to join the Teamsters in March, becoming the third IKEA location to organize with the union in North America.
"Joining the Teamsters gave us a voice, and this contract shows the power of that decision," said Velvety Beard, an IKEA worker and member of Local 179. "Our solidarity made the difference, and now every worker at this facility will benefit from what we achieved together."
After months of bargaining, the workers were forced onto the picket line in August when management failed to offer a fair first contract.
"These workers stood strong on the picket line and never lost sight of what they were fighting for," said Chris Richter, President of Local 179. "Their determination secured a first contract that recognizes their contributions and delivers the respect they've earned."
Workers at the distribution center play a critical role in moving furniture and home goods across the Midwest and throughout the company's supply chain. IKEA reported more than $1.7 billion in net profits last year.
"This agreement sends a clear message that workers throughout IKEA's supply chain are prepared to stand together and demand their fair share," said Tom Erickson, Director of the Teamsters Warehouse Division. "From forming their union to winning a strong first contract, these workers demonstrated the power of solidarity and the strength of the Teamsters movement."
