Important For Any Homeowner 'Going Solar'

STONY BROOK, N.Y., June 26, 2013 /PRNewswire/ -- Set sights on Long Island this Sunday 06/30 to see the latest development in new solar roofing.  DOW powerhouse, a building materials division of DOW, announced the development of a new solar "shingle" that is designed to replace the former solar "panel" and has named a Long Island-based building contractor Division 7 Inc. Residential & Commercial as exclusive representative for the New York tri-state region.  The introduction, which consists of a free BBQ and actual side-by-side home comparison, is important enough for DOW to send a Vice President with her family to attend.  The event, held at 11 Seville Lane in Stony Brook, Long Island starts at 11 am and runs through 4pm.  

The company has referred to the new design as "reinventing the roof" because technologists at DOW have incorporated a unique, lightweight, slim panel that matches a standard asphalt roof shingle.  It was explained by a spokesperson that "the aesthetics of the new panel allow the solar power roof sections to match a standard roof without adding bulk or large unsightly panels.  In addition, the panels lay flush with the roof, which eliminates the problems associated with large panels," and goes on to say, "There were a list of factors that influenced the design, including the elimination of nest building by pests under the older panels and corrosive damage often encountered because of the penetration into the existing roof structure, necessary to mount the much larger panels."  So far, the newer panels have met with enthusiasm by homeowners because of both the aesthetics and the structural advantages.  From a distance, the solar shingles do look very similar to the surrounding shingles.  Another big factor is the cost advantage and the financial cooperation by government in having "green" technology in one's home. 

"This is a no-brainer," said Richard Ciota, the contractor from Division 7. "There are two homes set up side by side for everyone to see -- one with the old technology and bulky style and the other with the new DOW shingles.  There's no comparison.  The shingles blend in and look really good, whereas the panels that used to be standard issue are awkward to say the least, and have caused all kinds of problems because of the kind of installation necessary -- we're really excited about this and of course my house was retrofitted first.  I'm very impressed."
