In HelloNation, Dental Experts Dr. Sulakshana "Sue" Sundaresan & Dr. Min Deng Highlight Dental Emergencies & Immediate Care Steps

The article highlights how to respond to dental emergencies such as severe pain, a knocked-out tooth, broken teeth, and facial swelling.

CHESHIRE, Conn., Oct. 30, 2026 /PRNewswire/ -- What qualifies as a dental emergency, and what should someone do before reaching a dentist?

HelloNation answers that question in an article featuring insights from Dr. Sulakshana "Sue" Sundaresan and Dr. Min Deng of Smilen Dental Group, which serves Wallingford, North Haven, and Cheshire, CT.

The HelloNation article explains that a dental emergency involves situations that require immediate attention to prevent complications or protect oral health. Common examples of a dental emergency include severe pain, uncontrolled bleeding, facial swelling, a knocked-out tooth, or a broken tooth with jagged edges. Fever combined with swelling or trauma may also indicate infection and should be evaluated promptly.

Severe pain is often one of the first signs of a dental emergency. Persistent toothaches that do not respond to over-the-counter medication may indicate infection, fracture, or an abscess. When severe pain occurs, patients are advised to rinse gently with warm water to keep the area clean and reduce the risk of infection. However, placing aspirin directly on the gums should be avoided, as it can irritate tissues and worsen discomfort.

A knocked-out tooth requires particularly urgent care. If a knocked-out tooth occurs, it should be picked up by the crown rather than the root to protect delicate cells necessary for reattachment. If the tooth is dirty, it can be gently rinsed with water but should not be scrubbed. Storing the knocked-out tooth in milk or a tooth preservation solution helps maintain viability until dental care is available. Acting quickly greatly improves the chances of saving the tooth.

A broken tooth is another common dental emergency that requires prompt evaluation. A broken tooth with sharp edges can injure soft tissues such as the tongue or cheeks. Until professional care is available, rinsing the mouth with warm water helps keep the area clean, while gentle pressure with gauze may control minor bleeding. Applying a cold compress on the outside of the face may also help reduce swelling and provide temporary relief.

Swelling or facial swelling in the jaw or mouth area may signal infection or injury. Facial swelling accompanied by fever can indicate a serious dental emergency that requires immediate professional attention. While waiting for treatment, rinsing with warm saltwater may help maintain oral hygiene, but applying heat directly to the swollen area should be avoided.

Uncontrolled bleeding following dental trauma is another situation that requires urgent care. Applying steady pressure with clean gauze or cloth can help manage bleeding temporarily. If bleeding continues after several minutes, immediate evaluation by a dental professional is necessary to prevent complications.

The article also notes that dislodged crowns or fillings may create a dental emergency when the exposed tooth becomes sensitive or sharp. Temporary dental cement or orthodontic wax can protect the area until a dentist restores the tooth properly.

The HelloNation article concludes that recognizing a dental emergency and taking the right first steps can reduce damage and discomfort before professional treatment. Rinsing the mouth, applying cold compresses, properly storing a knocked-out tooth, and avoiding harmful remedies can help protect oral health until a dentist provides care.
