In HelloNation, Radon Mitigation Expert Paul Nicholson Explains Airflow Design in Radon Mitigation Systems

The article outlines how airflow capacity, pipe sizing, and fan performance shape long-term radon reduction results.

MILWAUKEE, Oct. 27, 2026 /PRNewswire/ -- Why does airflow design play such a critical role in radon mitigation system performance? The answer is published in a HelloNation article, featuring insights from Paul Nicholson of Radon Measurement & Elimination Services (RMES).

The HelloNation article explains that a radon mitigation system works by reducing indoor radon levels through the removal of soil gases beneath a home. Central to this process is airflow design, which enables the system to create a stable vacuum and safely vent radon gas outside. Without proper airflow design, even a properly installed system may struggle to maintain effective radon reduction.

The article describes how creating a consistent sub slab vacuum is the primary goal of any radon mitigation system. This vacuum draws radon gas away from the structure before it can enter living spaces. Airflow design is what makes this possible, as sufficient air movement is required to overcome natural pressure and maintain control over indoor radon levels.

System design plays a major role in determining how well airflow design functions. The article notes that each home has unique structural conditions, including soil composition and foundation type, which influence airflow needs. A radon mitigation system that does not account for these variables may fail to achieve consistent radon reduction, even if it meets basic installation standards.

Pipe sizing is identified as a key factor that directly affects airflow design. The article explains that standard pipe sizing may not provide enough capacity for certain homes, particularly those requiring higher airflow. When pipe sizing is too limited, the system cannot generate the necessary sub slab vacuum, which can reduce its ability to maintain lower indoor radon levels.

Fan performance is another critical element discussed in the article. Radon fans are responsible for pulling air from beneath the home and pushing it through the system. The article highlights that strong fan performance must be paired with appropriate pipe sizing to achieve balanced airflow design. Without this balance, the radon mitigation system may not perform as intended.

The interaction between pipe sizing and fan performance is essential for achieving reliable results. The article explains that a powerful fan paired with undersized piping can restrict airflow, while large piping without sufficient fan performance may fail to create adequate suction. Effective airflow design requires both elements to work together to sustain a stable sub slab vacuum.

The article also emphasizes that airflow design directly impacts the level of radon reduction that can be achieved. Systems with limited airflow may only reduce indoor radon levels to minimum thresholds, while those with greater airflow capacity can achieve more consistent and meaningful reductions. This difference can influence long-term radon exposure within the home.

Environmental conditions further affect airflow design requirements. The article describes how soil density, moisture, and foundation depth can all impact how air moves beneath a structure. In regions with elevated indoor radon levels, higher airflow capacity may be necessary to maintain effective radon reduction.

Long-term performance is another reason airflow design is so important. The HelloNation article explains that systems designed with minimal airflow may struggle over time as conditions change. A radon mitigation system built with adequate airflow design, proper pipe sizing, and reliable fan performance is better equipped to maintain stable indoor radon levels and consistent radon reduction.

The article concludes that understanding airflow design helps homeowners evaluate the effectiveness of a radon mitigation system. By focusing on airflow capacity, pipe sizing, and fan performance, it becomes easier to identify solutions that deliver reliable radon reduction and sustained control of indoor radon levels.
