INDEPENDENCE THROUGH EMPLOYMENT: Nominate an Employee with Disabilities for SCLAD's (Spinal Cord Living-Assistance Development, Inc.) Esteemed Employee Award
HIALEAH, Fla., Aug. 29, 2013 /PRNewswire/ -- Assistant Secretary of Labor for Disability Employment Policy, Kathleen Martinez, will be Keynote Speaker at the Disability Employment Awareness Luncheon, on October 11, 2013, at The Rusty Pelican in Key Biscayne, Florida. The Luncheon is an acknowledgement and celebration of October, National Disability Employment Awareness Month, as designated nationally by President Barack Obama and in Florida by Governor Rick Scott. It has been an important initiative of the U.S. Department of Labor's Office of Disability Employment Policy under Assistant Secretary Martinez's tenure to develop policies that encourage the employment of persons with disabilities by private companies as well as government.
The Luncheon is co-sponsored by SCLAD (Spinal Cord Living-Assistance Development, Inc.) and the Miami Herald. SCLAD (http://www.sclad.org/), is a Miami-Dade County community-based organization serving individuals with disabilities for more than 25 years. It is currently commencing the development of its fourth barrier-free affordable housing project as a City of Hialeah and State of Florida Certified Community Housing Development Organization (CHDO). SCLAD's Mission is to assist persons with disabilities in their quest for independence, self-sufficiency and community integration. The luncheon and award ceremony are initiatives of its Vocational Services Program to encourage individuals with disabilities to continue their quest for independence through employment; and to motivate employers to hire more persons with disabilities.
Ten persons with disabilities who are working will be honored with the "Esteemed Employee Award" at the luncheon. Nominations for this award can be made by anyone, must be endorsed by the employer and received by SCLAD by September 9, 2013.
The Miami Herald, SCLAD and the U.S. Department of Labor's Office of Disability Employment Policy unite to show that when given the opportunity, persons with disabilities "are EQUAL to the task;" and, they do become Esteemed Employees. Nominations for this award can be made by anyone, must be endorsed by the employer and received at SCLAD by September 9, 2013.
