Company expands its role in battery-grade phosphates to support domestic LFP and sodium-ion battery growth across EV and energy storage applications
CRANBURY, N.J., Sept. 21, 2026 /PRNewswire/ -- Innophos is expanding its role in the electric energy storage system and battery markets, leveraging its unique position as a premier North America-based, vertically integrated producer of battery-grade phosphates. Through this initiative, Innophos will produce (i) iron phosphate for current lithium iron phosphate (LFP) technologies and (ii) sodium iron phosphate (NFPP), a next generation battery technology.
Richard Hooper, President and CEO of Innophos, states, "This represents several years of strategic planning to deliver value to the North American energy infrastructure market, helping stabilize the electricity grid and support future energy growth with a domestic raw material supply chain. This initiative is intended to give the market a catalyst to shift from only assembling foreign goods to production of North American-sourced battery cells using local raw materials made by a U.S.-owned supplier. Innophos brings a strong foundation to this market, with a 100+ year history as one of the largest specialty phosphate producers in the Americas, supported by its unique asset base, technology capabilities and existing North American manufacturing infrastructure."
Innophos significantly expanded its U.S. based purified phosphoric acid production capacity over the past several years and is targeting further increases in battery-grade phosphate material capacity by 2028, including iron phosphate and NFPP, at its facility in Nashville, Tennessee. Karen Winkowski, PhD, VP of Innovation at Innophos, states, "Innophos is well positioned to support much of the forecasted growth in phosphate-based cathode material demand, driven by lithium iron phosphate and next generation sodium-ion battery chemistries, across electric vehicle and stationary energy storage products."
