Eleven years ago, Liu Jingkang, not long out of university, launched his startup together with a group of business partners in their early twenties by making the most unassuming 360-degree camera accessories. This fledgling team of fresh graduates had no experience, no funding and no mature supply chain. Team members worked on improving product, reached out to media, and sought funding at the same time. At times, they got only three to four hours of sleep a day.
A turning point came in 2016, when the team showed up at the Consumer Electronics Show in the United States with Nano, its first-generation consumer-grade 360-degree camera. Boasting features like plug-and-shoot and direct sharing to social media, the Nano became an instant hit.
At that time, global renowned brands still dominated the consumer electronics industry, and it was far from easy for a Chinese startup to gain a firm foothold in the high-end imaging space. The hardware industry in particular has long R&D cycles and high trial-and-error costs – a single misstep could push a company out of the market.
But Insta360 decided not to follow existing players – instead, it would set its own standards. While others were still competing on specs, Insta360 had realized that the core of the imaging ecosystem is not the device, but people.
