SAN JOSE, Calif., July 7, 2011 /PRNewswire/ -- IO Turbine Inc. today announced that it has been named by CRN magazine among the companies that represent "the future of storage" in a July 6 feature entitled "10 Coolest Storage Startups of 2011 (So Far)."

Described as storage startups that have set their sights on cloud storage and big data, the companies highlighted are among those accelerating storage in data center and cloud environments with new ways to interface with SSDs and/or server memory. IO Turbine was included for its ability to overcome bottlenecks caused by multiple virtual machines sitting on clustered physical servers that are trying to access NAS, Fibre Channel or iSCSI SAN storage.
"We're pleased to be recognized for the hard work we've put into eliminating performance bottlenecks and increasing VM density for even greater server consolidation in VMware environments, while at the same time lowering costs and complexity," said Rich Boberg, Chief Executive Officer at IO Turbine. "We've really been honored by how well we've been received in both the user and editorial communities since our launch. This recognition is further validation to our approach in making the most of Flash storage to transparently and significantly accelerate virtualized application performance without sacrificing the benefits that virtualization provides."
The company's Accelio software works at the hypervisor and Guest OS level so it eliminates the common constraint of hardware caching solutions such as SAN, NAS and caching appliances that are downstream from the host and have no visibility into the source of the data they are caching. Accelio learns what is most important to cache by being right in the guest OS/virtual machine making the requests and redirecting them to Flash/SSD, also located in the host, eliminating latency associated with traversing the network. This dramatically accelerates those requests as they no longer need to be sent to external storage or caching appliances and can take advantage of SSD/Flash or PCI-based devices to deliver I/O responses at near memory speeds.
