Iota Kickstarter Campaign Raises $100k in 9 Days, Free Crowd-Sourced IoT Network Closer to Reality

SAN FRANCISCO, July 25, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- Imagine a world where a mom can see that her child is at soccer practice from her smart phone, a world where a dog sneaking out of the backyard immediately triggers a smartphone notification to the owner, and a world where the caretaker of an Alzheimer's patient no longer has to worry about the patient wandering off.  This dream could come to fruition as soon as early 2015 thanks to the Iota, a revolutionary tracking and sensing device released by a startup called Iotera. They are currently running a popular Kickstarter campaign (www.getiota.com) aimed at building the first free nationwide Internet of Things (IoT) wireless network. With $100K raised by the end of the ninth day, the Iota's network can be expected in early 2015 in every major United States city, with metropolitan areas such as the San Francisco Bay Area and Los Angeles almost completely covered by Iota's free network.

The Iota network will be built using small, customer installed wireless access points called Home Bases, where each Home Base is attached to a window inside a home. A second device called the Iota, measures only 43mm x 22mm x 11mm and is attached to the things to be monitored or tracked. Despite being the size of a typical key fob, the Iota can send its location to the nearest Home Base up to 4 miles away, a range that far exceeds other tracking technologies. The range of the Iota will typically reach much further than those 4 miles, since the Iota can communicate with any nearby Home Base. The Home Bases form a crowd-sourced IoT network, where just a few Home Bases can allow for a city to be covered.

Iotera currently has pre-orders for around 600 Home Bases that will be installed across the nation. The current planned coverage map can be found at www.iotera.com/coverage. For the remainder of the Kickstarter campaign, which is set to end on August 13th, the company hopes to reach its goal of $250,000, which will amount to the sale of nearly 2,000 Home Bases.
