Before Freud, no one had given scientific consideration to the problem of pain and pleasure, the ego and spirituality. His 1929 book "Das Unbehagen in der Kultur" (literally, "The Unease in Culture" usually translated "Civilization and Its Discontents.") states, "[The] purpose of life is simply the program of the pleasure principle..."

The pleasure principle is the natural instinct of every ego to seek pleasure and avoid pain. Freud distinguishes three main sources of painful suffering: our own painful and mortal existence, the cruel and destructive aspects of the natural world, and the suffering from interactions with other human beings in a society. He concludes that the "oceanic feeling" (his term for what we might call spirituality) is a regression to an infantile state (represented by religion) and that the pleasure principle is doomed to fail.

In other words, Freud outlined the problem without giving any viable solution.
