iScan Online Asks CISOs: How Does Your Organization's Real-Time Data Breach Risk Stack Up?
A handful of laptops are exposing your business to millions of dollars in risk, according to data collected by iScan Online
DALLAS and WASHINGTON, Oct. 28, 2015 /PRNewswire/ -- Today iScan Online has published a report documenting data breach risk figures gathered from over 700,000 servers, desktops and laptops. Based on the report, iScan Online is urging Chief Information Security Officers (CISOs) to look beyond their "crown jewels" of known asset repositories to find the real-time total risk exposure for their organizations.
One reason why is that only five percent of desktops and laptops would cost a business less than $25,000 each if breached, while three percent would cost the business over $250,000 each. That means that just a handful of laptops at a 250-employee company would cost the company millions of dollars when a breach occurs.
Unprecedented Visibility into Each Device on the Network
iScan's patented technology scans even the largest server and most remote device to detect data breach risk missed by other security solutions. Risk includes unprotected data, such as credit card numbers, bank account numbers and health information, as well as vulnerabilities and file access permissions. For example:
- 87% of the desktops and laptops in the report had unprotected credit card data stored on them
- 36% had social security numbers
Once data breach risk is detected, iScan automatically calculates the cost of the device if breached by weighting an industry standard dollar figure by the real-time data breach risk. iScan calls this cost the Security Number.
The iScan Data Breach Risk Brief 2015 finds:
- The average data breach liability of desktops and laptops is $48,843
- The average server $301,098

"The iScan Data Breach Risk Brief confirms what many already CISOs suspect," explains Carl Banzhof, iScan Online CEO and co-founder. "Even the most advanced perimeter protections cannot control for unsafe employee behavior that can open the door to malware, leak data, or otherwise compromise security."
Financially Prioritize Devices for Risk Reduction and Board Reporting
CISOs not only gain visibility with risk intelligence from iScan, the devices are financially prioritized. Remediation can begin with the riskiest offenders.
Putting a dollar number on data breach risk also creates an effective connection with non-technical executives. CISOs can now:
- Guide the Board on security oversight
- Engage other executives on how security affects business outcomes
- Justify security resource requests to the Chief Financial Officer
- Target cyber security awareness training by department
CEO Banzhof continues, "After gaining visibility into the devices on their networks, the next great challenge for CISOs is to enable the business. Using the iScan Data Breach Risk Brief as a benchmark, CISOs can measure their own risk exposure. By presenting that risk in dollars, CISOs can effectively communicate risk with the Board and other non-IT executives."
