iTrinegy Showcases Major Update to Award-Winning AppQoS APM Technology at IP EXPO

iTrinegy is demonstrating its updated, award-winning AppQoS APM technology at this year's IP EXPO, the fastest growing end-to-end enterprise IT event. iTrinegy is a long-time supporter of the event and will be showcasing its new AppQoS Microsoft File Share Analysis Module.

The module is based on the Microsoft Common Internet File System (CIFS) protocol and enables companies to analyse the performance of shared files, identify which are most commonly used and determine how long users wait for them to open or load with a view to increasing employee efficiency.

"Our new AppQoS module has been developed as a direct result of customer feedback," says Frank Puranik, iTrinegy Product Director. "Our customers typically use a host of applications, such as Microsoft Office, Visio and Adobe Acrobat. Employees and users of these applications store files and data in a central location for security and data recovery reasons. Access to these files, via CIFS, can be quick if the storage location shares the same LAN as the user, or there can be delays if accessed via WAN or wireless. With this new module, customers can now view and analyse the activity performance of applications using the CIFS protocol'.

With the prevalence of centralisation and virtualisation, accessing files and data over WANs and wireless connections is far slower than on a wired LAN, and can lead to employees quickly becoming frustrated by slow response times. If this issue is not addressed there is a danger that they will choose to download and store items to their own devices for ease and speed of use rather than trying to access the central repository, resulting in different versions of files being stored in different locations as well as the associated security implications

The new AppQoS module enables organisations to analyse networks and determine which users are logging in, what files are being accessed, how frequently, how long they took, whether a file required access to other files to complete the download process as well as determining if a file was uploaded or downloaded. In this way, bottlenecks can be identified along with the most commonly accessed files and data in order to address the issues.

"This, in particular, is important to organisations operating in the cloud or considering a move to the cloud as migrating applications to the cloud means moving the CIFS servers as well, which would increase file access times. Now, organisations can use the AppQoS module to identify which files are most likely to have performance issues so that they can be effectively dealt with," says Frank.

Companies that are still considering the implications of a move to the cloud can use the AppQoS module, in conjunction with the iTrinegy Network Emulator (INE), to simulate the proposed network environment in order to test application performance prior to any move, and reduce the risk of a failed CIFS migration.

"By giving customers the ability to reduce access times and make the user experience smoother and more efficient, employee productivity can be boosted, as can security as there is no need to download documents and files on to personal devices."

iTrinegy customer NHS West, South Yorkshire and Bassetlaw Commissioning Support Unit has experienced these benefits first hand. After a reported slowdown of a practice's hosted clinical system, which was impacting on patient care, the iTrinegy AppQoS product was deployed and quickly identified the cause of the performance issues.

"AppQoS was able to produce a definitive list of the users and devices that had caused the bandwidth bottlenecks. After consultation with the practice manager and staff we quickly restored system access.  AppQoS has been used on a number of sites with similar performance related problems - all with positive outcomes," says Paul Simms, Network Support Manager, Commissioning Support Unit.
