It's Puppy Season: How to Prepare your Home for a New Pet

Educate yourself. It's important to start training your new pet right away, so don't wait until you bring puppy home to learn how to house and crate train. The Training Tails section of the Canine Company website has lots of free advice about puppy care.

Invest in a quality crate. Early and consistent use of a crate will speed housetraining. A puppy usually won't soil where he sleeps, so put him in his crate anytime you can't be with him.  Because dogs have an instinctive desire to den, the crate will quickly become a place puppy feels safe and secure when alone. Be sure to choose a crate with a divider that puppy can grow into.

Puppy-proof the family room. Until fully house trained, puppy should be confined to one room or area that can be made puppy safe. Place her crate and toys there and remove expensive area rugs that might be damaged. Hide wires, plants and anything that poses a danger if puppy chews it. Be sure to purchase a few sturdy toys that will stand up to chewing.
