John Moore Services Marks 50th Anniversary by Creating, Delivering Storybook to Area Kids

"Buddy, The Home Repair Bear" celebrates the hero in everyone

HOUSTON, May 15, 2015 /PRNewswire/ -- A large convoy of John Moore technicians departed the company headquarters today on a different kind of mission– delivering 5,050 specially created story books and teddy bears to 12 area low-income schools as Houston's largest family-owned home services company marked its 50th anniversary by giving back to the community's children.

A 25-truck convoy of John Moore employees departed headquarters today bound for 12 area elementary schools and filled with storybooks and teddy bears for the kids. Created especially for John Moore Services anniversary by a local illustrator and writer, the children's book features "Buddy, the Home Repair Bear" and tells a positive story that illustrates how, by helping others and doing a good job, each of us can be a hero in our own way. It also carries another favorite John Moore message—that working in the home repair industry is valuable and rewarding work. With John Moore technicians and staff handling the distribution, each elementary school child received a storybook and a little brown teddy bear that looks just like Buddy, the character in the story.

The anniversary event stemmed from John Moore's desire to support literacy and do something nice for kids at the same time. "We care deeply about the Houston community, which we have served for 50 years, and we wanted to give back in a unique way," said Don Valentine, president of John Moore Services. "Many children don't have enough books at home during the critical early reading years. Buddy's story is a way to give these children both a book and an idea---that each of us can be a hero in our own way."

Valentine adds that Buddy's story is also a tribute to all the skilled John Moore technicians, past and present, who have solved the home repair problems of thousands of Houstonians every day. "Home repair services really are important and rewarding professions and we wanted to share that with kids, too," he said.
