HOUSTON, April 29, 2011 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- On May 7, the Johnson Space Center Contractors (JSC) Environmental Partnership will host an electronic waste (e-waste) recycling event from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. The event will be held in the Space Center Houston parking lot. This event is open and free to the public and allows anyone in the community to dispose of all electronics in an environmentally friendly manner.

Environmental Protection Agency-certified HP is sponsoring the event, and Sims Recycling Solutions will recycle the collected material as an HP-approved and certified recycler. Support for the event will be provided by several NASA JSC contractors.
"These community events have been a great success in the past, so we know the community has a constant need for a free way to recycle old and broken electronics in an environmentally safe and secure manner," said Jennifer Morrison, environmental specialist for Earth Resources Technology at JSC. "This year's event comes at a perfect time. Spring cleaning is a great way to eliminate the clutter around the house and do a little something extra for those special ladies on Mother's Day."
There is no limit to the amount of items people can bring. Examples of accepted material, both working and non-working, include:
- Personal computers (includes desktop, PCs, laptops and workstations)
- Monitors and flat panel displays
- Printers (ink and laser)
- All-in-Ones
- Scanners
- Digital cameras
- Handheld computers
- Cords
- Digital entertainment and telecommunications equipment (VCRs, cell phones, portable music devices)
Unacceptable items:
- Major appliances including microwave ovens, TVs, washers and dryers. Equipment containing radioactive materials, free-flowing liquids, chlorofluorocarbons, polychlorinated biphenyls or other "hazardous wastes" as defined in and having the meaning ascribed in and listed under 40 SS261.3 and the regulations promulgated hereunder, as amended from time to time.
Items collected will be recycled in North America instead of shipping materials to developing nations, and all materials will be handled in a legally compliant, data secure, traceable, and environmentally sustainable manner.
