KidSpirit, Cross-Cultural Youth-Led Platform, Celebrates Its First Decade
NEW YORK, Nov. 8, 2017 /PRNewswire/ -- At a time when our interconnected world seems more divided and estranged than ever, it is crucial that we find ways to build bridges of understanding and authentic community. In this fractured climate, adults may wonder how to create opportunities for the next generation to engage each other in a constructive spirit. KidSpirit, the online magazine and community created by and for kids to explore life's big questions, has a unique model for connecting kids from all backgrounds and traditions. Now celebrating its tenth year, KidSpirit has built an inclusive community of young writers and artists from across the country and around the world through exploring questions of meaning.
Since KidSpirit's founding by Elizabeth Dabney Hochman and a small group of intrepid middle-schoolers in Brooklyn, the magazine has published the work of 11-to-17-year-olds from 19 countries and has a network of youth editors in nine countries. These editors choose quarterly themes and review submissions of articles, poetry and artwork around these themes. Selected topics, now 39 in all, range from money to gender, power, creativity, human dignity, and ethics, to name a few. Articles, media reviews and essays are all collaboratively edited by the New York editorial board in an interactive process with each writer before being published in the magazine. This process of honing work over time results in impressive and inspiring work, and has earned KidSpirit 16 awards. A decade later, KidSpirit is read in 180 countries, both on its website KidSpiritonline.com, and in syndication on other media outlets including the Huffington Post.
On November 9th, 2017, KidSpirit will bring together friends of the organization, young participants, and alumni to celebrate its first 10 years. KidSpirit's tenth anniversary celebration will honor two outstanding individuals who embody the authentic leadership KidSpirit's participants aspire to: Patrick R. Gaston, President and CEO of Gaston Consulting, and Laura R. Walker, President and CEO of New York Public Radio. Mr. Gaston and Ms. Walker, along with youth editors from KidSpirit's global network, will make remarks.
