Land in legend-rich Burke's Garden to sell in Oct. 11 Woltz auction
TAZEWELL, Va., Sept. 10, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- If the 133-acre property overlooking Burke's Garden had been for sale in the 19th Century, the famous Biltmore Estate might have been built there rather than in Asheville, N.C. The Vanderbilt family gave up when none of the local farmers would sell.
That won't be a problem on Oct. 11, when the land overlooking Burke's Garden and adjoining the Jefferson National Forest land will sell at auction. Woltz & Associates is marketing the property and managing the sale.
"The stories about this area are amazing. Supposedly, it got its name when a fellow named James Burke threw away some potato peelings, and when his group returned a year later, they found potatoes growing. While that story may have grown over the years, the area is known for its fertile ground," said Jim Woltz, president of the auction company.

The auction will begin at 11 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 11, at Burke's Garden Community Center (formerly Burke's Garden Elementary School).
