Lasker Foundation Appoints New President

NEW YORK, Jan. 23, 2013 /PRNewswire/ -- The Albert and Mary Lasker Foundation, which for 68 years has championed the greatest advances in medical research, announced today the appointment of Claire Pomeroy, M.D., M.B.A., as President of the Lasker Foundation. Dr. Pomeroy will join the Foundation this spring.

Dr. Pomeroy is an expert in infectious diseases and a professor of internal medicine and microbiology and immunology. She comes to the Foundation from her position as Dean of the University of California, Davis School of Medicine, CEO of the UC Davis Health System, and Vice Chancellor for Human Health Sciences at UC Davis.  As a clinician, Dr. Pomeroy is a long-time advocate for patients with HIV/AIDS.  She has a special interest in health-care policy and has led efforts to advance electronic records to improve patient care.  Dr. Pomeroy succeeds Dr. Maria Freire, who led the Foundation from 2008 until her appointment as President of the Foundation for the National Institutes of Health in Bethesda, Maryland last November.

In her new post, Dr. Pomeroy will take the lead role in guiding the Lasker Foundation in its mission of supporting biomedical research toward conquering disease, improving human health and extending life, and in presiding over the Lasker Awards, which since 1945 have recognized the contributions of scientists, physicians, and public servants who have made major progress in understanding, diagnosing, treating, curing, and preventing human disease worldwide. Eighty-three Lasker laureates have received the Nobel Prize, including 31 in the last two decades.
