LBDA Shines a Light on Lewy Body Dementia during October's Lewy Body Awareness Month
ATLANTA, Sept. 28, 2016 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- To drive awareness of a common but little-known dementia, Lewy body dementia (LBD), the Lewy Body Dementia Association and families across the nation stand together in solidarity, making October, Lewy Body Awareness Month.
LBD is the most misdiagnosed form of dementia and affects approximately 1.4 million Americans, a number expected to grow with our aging population. The disease is the second most common cause of progressive dementia after Alzheimer's disease.
LBD is characterized by an abnormal build-up of Lewy bodies, which are protein deposits in the brain cells that regulate behavior, memory, movement, and personality. It impairs thinking, movement, sleep, and behavior—causing hallucinations or acting out dreams. LBD also affects blood pressure control, temperature regulation, digestion, and other autonomic body functions. While there is currently no cure, recognizing symptoms early can help ensure quicker, appropriate treatment and caregiver support.
Events are being organized across the country to help increase awareness. Through 5k walks and various fundraising events caregivers, families, and friends are working together to educate the public about LBD. Topping off the month of awareness, the Lewy Body Dementia Association will host a special luminary event via social media to "Shine a light" on Lewy.
"Each event that helps someone learn more about LBD or provides a family with information to better cope with the disease is critical. Together we will continue to shine a light on LBD until it becomes a household word." said Michael Koehler, CEO of Lewy Body Dementia Association on the organizations efforts taking place through October. "It takes everyone in the LBD community, from the caregiver to the families and professionals caring for them, to get involved and make an impact. Together we are providing vital information and outreach to those affected by this condition," added Koehler.
LBDA encourages people and organizations to host or attend local events to learn more about the disease, how it impacts those diagnosed, their caregivers and families. Participants will better be able to answer the question, "Lewy Who?" and help spread awareness of this devastating disease.
