Library of Congress Rare Books & Special Collections Division Picks LAC Federal Services to Digitize Card Catalog

ROCKVILLE, Md., July 18, 2018 /PRNewswire/ -- LAC Group, a provider of mission-critical outsourced library, information, and knowledge management services for the U.S. government, has been awarded a contract to convert over 500,000 catalog cards into online records from the Library of Congress Rare Books and Special Collections Division.

"Our team will be creating digital catalog entries for half a million rare and unique materials," says Tom Miller, vice president for LAC Federal Services. "The library was looking for a team with a comprehensive understanding of the Library of Congress systems, requirements and culture to ensure this amazing collection can be discovered online by researchers around the world, so it's especially gratifying to be selected for this important project."

While the Library of Congress online catalog contains over 17 million entries, the Rare Books & Special Collections Division still has many assets that are only findable using paper cards. Due to this large backlog, the Library needed detailed-oriented cataloging librarians with advanced library degrees to review the cards and create digital bibliographic, holding and item records.

LAC Federal Services' clients include the Foreign Service Institute's Stephen Low Information Center, The IMF Joint Bank-Fund Library, National Agricultural Library, National Library of Education, NOAA Central Library and Regional Libraries, and USAID Library and Knowledge Services Center. Their services range from supporting specific functions at these entities to managing and staffing the complete facility.
