Lick the Plate on 93.9 The River Celebrates Great Lakes Surfing & Food with Ella and Beryl Skrocki from Sleeping Bear Surf & Kayak in Empire, MI
Lick the Plate host and Great Lakes Surfer David Boylan is joined by Ella and Beryl Skrocki to discuss their favorite "unsalted" surf spots, where they eat after an appetite-building session and the music that helps fuel the stoke.
EMPIRE, Mich., Oct. 31, 2017 /PRNewswire/ -- Lick the Plate on 93.9 The River where the Detroit, Windsor, and Michigan culinary and foodie communities tell their stories, is celebrating the freshwater surfing scene and the food that fuels it on its 5 episodes airing the week of October 30, 2017. Lick the Plate host David Boylan honed his early surfing skills on the Great Lakes, primarily in Grand Haven and other spots along the west coast of Michigan. His connection to Empire, Michigan through a sibling in the area led to meeting Ella and Beryl Skrocki, of the family owned and operated, Sleeping Bear Surf & Kayak. The Skrocki family has been leaders in the Great Lakes surfing scene since 2004 as retailers of boards, wetsuits and all surf and paddle related accessories. They also spread their stoke for surf and the freshwater through rentals, lessons and camps. Ella has surfed all over the Great Lakes, including a stint in Lake Superior and has been featured on the cover of Traverse Magazine. Ella is also a contributor to Great Lakes Surfer's Journal.
The correlation of surfing and the appetite it builds, along with October and November being prime surfing months on the Great Lakes inspired Boylan to feature Ella and Beryl on Lick the Plate. "It was such a treat for me to come across these two women who are so immersed in the freshwater surfing world," said Boylan. He added, "Ella totally walks the talk when it comes to knowing the weather patterns that create waves, then hitting the road to ride those waves, unless they happen to be in her own Empire backyard.
