CLEARWATER, Fla., Nov. 2, 2015 /PRNewswire/ -- Link rot (or link death) is the insidious problem where hyperlinks on websites refer to web pages, servers or resources that are no longer available. This is commonly seen as the dreaded "404 Error – Page not found". Further, although the term "link rot" was coined with websites in mind, in fact links can "rot" in any type of file, from AutoCAD to Excel.
This problem has touched some of the biggest companies, such as IBM and Adobe, and has recently been discovered within the websites of the Supreme Court, which house links to PDF files that reference decisions by the Justices. In a study done by Harvard University, over 70% of those links are victims of link rot1, and are no longer working. This means important documents cannot be found.
A study by BMC Bioinformatics found that websites with a life span of 9.3 years had, on average, only 62% of their hyperlinks still intact2.
Ed Clark, COO of LinkTek, said "Link rot is a problem that any company can encounter, especially if they are evolving and growing. One day, they find themselves with a website riddled with broken links, usually because files weren't migrated correctly as the company expanded." Mr. Clark continues, "A company's website is part of their public image and a website with broken links reflects badly on the entire organization."
LinkTek reintroduced its plug-in for LinkFixer Advanced that has the ability to repair broken file links that relate to the web. With the Webmaster plug-in, users are able to safeguard and repair links in .html, .asps, .css and flash files. Not solely for web links, "LinkFixer Advanced ensures that all your links don't fall prey to link death," Clark stated.
LinkFixer Advanced automatically finds and fixes broken links in an organization's most critical file types, such as Word, Excel, Acrobat and AutoCAD, so that data migrations and file system reorganizations can be completed quickly, accurately and without causing lost data or lost productivity. LinkFixer Advanced eliminates problems before they happen, and aids overworked IT professionals in moving forward on their projects.
