CLEARWATER, Fla., Nov. 2, 2015 /PRNewswire/ -- Link rot (or link death) is the insidious problem where hyperlinks on websites refer to web pages, servers or resources that are no longer available. This is commonly seen as the dreaded "404 Error – Page not found". Further, although the term "link rot" was coined with websites in mind, in fact links can "rot" in any type of file, from AutoCAD to Excel.
This problem has touched some of the biggest companies, such as IBM and Adobe, and has recently been discovered within the websites of the Supreme Court, which house links to PDF files that reference decisions by the Justices. In a study done by Harvard University, over 70% of those links are victims of link rot1, and are no longer working. This means important documents cannot be found.
A study by BMC Bioinformatics found that websites with a life span of 9.3 years had, on average, only 62% of their hyperlinks still intact2.
