"Living Wall of Honor" Constructed as Tribute to Post 9/11 Military Veterans at World War II Memorial in Washington, D.C.

ALEXANDRIA, Va., Aug. 12, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- On Sunday, August 10, 2014, The Code of Support Foundation (COSF) and its partners, Green Living Technologies International (GLTI), The Home Depot, Northrop Grumman along with volunteers constructed the "Living Wall of Honor" for post 9/11 Military Veterans. The build was open to the public and brought together members of the military and civilian communities to participate in the creation of a living memorial representing the foundation's bridge home for post 9/11 veterans and their families.

The unprecedented service project was a call to action and kicked off COSF's annual Spirit of '45 Day event at the World War II Memorial on the National Mall in Washington, D.C. In 2010, Congress unanimously passed Concurrent Resolution 226 calling for a national "Spirit of '45 Day" to be observed on the second Sunday in August to celebrate the end of World War II and the spirit of service, shared sacrifice and national unity that made victory possible.

"The Living Wall of Honor is the only organic memorial to our nation's fallen heroes over the past 13 years of war, and the Code of Support Foundation's Spirit of '45 Day event, provided an opportunity for every American to recognize today's military service members and their sacrifice," said Major General (Ret) Alan Salisbury, COSF founder and CEO.

In addition to volunteers, participants also included military veterans from World War II to Operation Iraqi Freedom and Operation Ensuring Freedom service members, The Honorable Robert L. Gordon III, Colonel (RET), President of Be The Change, Inc., WWII Rosie the Riveters, members of the West Point Alumni Glee Club, and Veteran Artists Program.

Designed by GLTI, The Living Wall of Honor's custom structure spans 16 feet wide by 8 feet high and was comprised of more than 1,000 multi-colored petunias and marigolds, provided by The Home Depot Foundation. The wall, with the help of Team Depot and other volunteers, took approximately one hour to assemble at the WWII Memorial site.

Later that day, the Living Wall of Honor was relocated to the Women In Military Service For America Memorial at the main gate to Arlington National Cemetery where it is expected to remain through September 11, 2014.
