Lon Smith Roofing's New Year's Resolution to Help Veterans
FORT WORTH, Texas, Dec. 20, 2016 /PRNewswire/ -- More than 1.6 million veterans call Texas home. And this holiday season, there are 1.6 million Texans who are all searching for something.
Many are searching for a job; others searching for better medical care; some searching for a place to live. But all are searching for ways to improve their lives.
As we head into the Christmas season and a new year, now is the time to think about what our veterans have done for us … and how much we can do for them.
At Lon Smith Roofing, we are committed to honoring those who have honored us with their service. Earlier this year, we began a partnership with the George W. Bush Institute to do our part to help veterans. The Bush Institute is one of the leading organizations in the country when it comes to not only helping veterans but also researching and understanding them. The Bush Institute believes that one of the best ways to help veterans is to understand who they are and what they are dealing with. As the Institute notes, "Research shows a civilian-military divide: 71% of Americans say they have little understanding of the issues facing post-9/11 veterans. And veterans agree: 84% say that the public has 'little awareness' of the issues facing them and their families."
So for 2017, our New Year's Resolution at Lon Smith will be to try even harder to understand our heroes and the challenges they face. And part of that is our continued commitment to our Roof for Vets program. This is a program we began where we take nominations from the public for worthy veterans and then select one veteran each quarter. The winner receives a free roof installation.
As we head into 2017, we are again asking for nominations. If you know a veteran in need, give us a call. We believe that any and everything we can do to honor our vets helps make a difference. Touching 1.6 million veterans may seem impossible; but every journey begins with a first step. And at Lon Smith Roofing, we believe the first step is using our expertise to help veterans. We know roofing; and so we are going to continue to offer the Roof for Vets program.
And we challenge others to think about their expertise and how it can be used to help veterans. Just think of all the ways that various Texans could help out: lawyers could offer free legal advice; doctors could offer discounted medical services; and business owners could offer jobs. This is the way we reach 1.6 million veterans in 2017—by working together.
So as we celebrate the Holidays, think about the veterans who have helped secure our freedom. Say a prayer for them. Then look for ways to help them in 2017.
