Los Angeles Periodontist, Dr. Markzar, Explains the Symptoms of Gum Disease
LOS ANGELES, May 22, 2013 /PRNewswire/ -- Dr. Sam Markzar, Los Angeles dental implants specialist, warns patients to be aware of the symptoms of gum disease, and seek dental care immediately if they notice any of the symptoms. Early intervention is important for eliminating the infection before it can cause serious health problems.
Periodontal disease begins with a bacterial infection. The bacteria combined with food particles and white blood cells form plaque. If plaque is not removed through brushing and flossing, the bacteria can deteriorate the gum tissue. Over time, infection can become so serious that it can cause the gums to recede from teeth, cause loss of bone density in the jaw, and even lead to tooth loss. Once the symptoms of periodontal disease are identified, patients can receive early treatment interventions to help contain their gum disease.
According to the American Academy of Periodontology, the symptoms of periodontal disease include:
- Pain in the mouth
- Gums that are inflamed, red, and/or tender
- Gums that bleed during or after brushing, flossing, or eating hard foods
- Gums that recede or begin to pull away from the teeth
- Loose teeth
- Pus that appears between the gums and the teeth
- Sores that appear on the gums
- Chronic bad breath
- Changes in the bite
- Changes in the fit of dentures or bridges
Dr. Markzar, Beverly Hills dental implants dentist, warns that these symptoms must be taken seriously and should be examined as soon as possible. In its earliest stages, periodontal disease is fairly simple to treat. However, when left untreated, steps must be taken to treat infected gum tissue and diminished bone, restore compromised teeth, or even rule out more serious conditions such as diabetes or heart condition, which are linked to the bacteria that causes periodontal disease.
