LAS VEGAS, July 26, 2018 /PRNewswire/ -- Los Cabos, Mexico, which comprises the resort areas of Cabo San Lucas, the Resort Corridor (the coastline between San Jose del Cabo and Cabo San Lucas) and San Jose del Cabo, has long been revered for its miles of stunning beaches stretching from the Pacific Ocean to the Sea of Cortez. Paired with its relaxed atmosphere, exceptional fishing, burgeoning art scene and incredible villas, Los Cabos is an idyllic vacation destination.
However, in summer 2017, a downslide in tourism came about owing to reports of increased security concerns in the region. The relative calm in this region of Mexico was shaken by several high-profile incidents of gang violence. This resulted in the U.S. State Department issuing a travel warning for Los Cabos. While the incidents of violence were never directly aimed at tourists, the sensational reports and new State Department designation was understandably alarming for U.S. travelers, and tourism numbers began to dip.
A Changing Narrative
One year on from the warnings, thanks to the collaborative efforts of the regional government and local businesses, the situation has changed dramatically. According to part-time residents, some of whom list their villas or private homes through Exotic Estates, when the alerts went out in August 2017 the regional government put security measures in place that would help address concerns, recharge tourism, and protect the essential revenue flow of the destination.
"We are pleased to share that we have been carefully monitoring the situation in Los Cabos to ensure that our clients are well-informed as to the status of any safety concerns," says Tyler Coons, founder of Exotic Estates, the high-end, bespoke villa and private home rental company which has a sizeable collection in the destination. "To bring our clients up to speed on the current situation, we reached out to contacts who reside in Los Cabos and we are pleased to share their feedback."
A Five-Point Security Plan
Los Cabos implemented its so-called "five-point" security plan, which has resulted in a widely reported 90% decrease in crime incidents since 2017.* The plan involves working with the US State Department to enhance security protocols, creating a "Rapid Response Network," an accelerated security surveillance program, adding new security bases and personnel, and a hotel security committee.
Thanks to these enhanced security measures, in January of 2018 the State Department removed the travel warning and today Los Cabos is a Level 2 (the Exercise Increased Caution rating), which is the same level for most of Western Europe (Germany, Denmark, England / UK, France, Spain and Italy).
One Exotic Estates villa owner said about the current vibe in Cabo, "…what I can tell you is that Los Cabos is now 100% safe and then some. I would walk most anywhere outside of the barrios at any time of night in both Cabo San Lucas and San Jose del Cabo."
Today Los Cabos has been deemed safe for tourism largely due to the significant efforts made by a public and private coalition to improve safety in the area.
Easy to Reach and Deals on Offer
While the numbers are still not where owners and businesses would like them to be, the region is ready to host visitors and demand is certainly picking up. In fact, recently several Hollywood stars have been spotted in Cabo, including Gwyneth Paltrow and Cortney Cox.
Los Cabos is well-served from several U.S. gateways, and is just a two- to three-hour flight for visitors from Texas and California, and about five hours nonstop from New York. The attributes of this ideal beach retreat include, among others, exceptional weather bringing sunshine nearly every day, a modern infrastructure, a thriving sport-fishing industry, and an endless selection of shops and restaurants catering to tourists.
Exotic Estates Cabo vacation villas are exceptional. There are exclusive, private communities boasting architecturally unique homes in San Jose del Cabo, along the Resort Corridor with its miles of superb beaches, and in Cabo San Lucas itself. There are even some deals to be had as villa owners seek to promote demand.
An example of the high-caliber homes on offer is the seven-bedroom Pedregal Enchantment Villa, boasting commanding views of the Pacific in Cabo San Lucas' prestigious Pedregal neighborhood.
