LONDON, August 8, 2012 /PRNewswire/ --
Poker remains the most popular online casino game in the world today, announce Lucky Nugget. According to figures published by leading gambling market research firm H2 Gambling Capital, interactive gambling (gambling that takes place online, via TV and via mobile devices) now makes up almost 10 per cent of global gambling's gross revenues, and this despite the fact that interactive gambling methods are still outlawed by a number of key regions, among them the US and large parts of Asia.
Online gambling revenues increased to €24.6bn in 2011, marking a 3.4 per cent increase over 2010 revenues, meaning that the sector now makes up 8.6 per cent of the global gambling market. The online sector has seen strong and steady growth since 2003, with revenues increasing by almost 800% to 2010, an impressive growth rate over this seven-year period.
Sports betting remains the largest section of online gambling by a long margin, making up 43 per cent of the global online market. However, growth in online casino gaming also remains strong, with an 8 per cent increase in online casino gaming revenues from 2010 to 2011, meaning that online casino games now account for 24 per cent of total online gambling revenue worldwide
Poker remains the single most popular online game; this game alone made up 13 per cent of the global online gambling market in 2011. From the official figures currently available, online poker remains the most popular casino game in America and in Norway, accounting for 19 per cent of US online casino gambling revenue (despite remaining illegal in the United States), and 28 per cent of the Norwegian online market.
Poker is a game that has received much public exposure over the years, with shows like Celebrity Poker Showdown, and televised tournaments like the World Series of Poker, helping to introduce the game to a wider audience. In addition, growth in online poker player numbers in recent years can also be partly attributed to the recent legalisation and regulation of the game in major European countries like France and Italy, the latter being the biggest online poker playing market in Europe in 2010.
Bingo follows close behind, with an 11 per cent share of online global gross revenues in 2011. Bingo is another game that has seen an increase in exposure in recent years, with extensive advertising campaigns encouraging new players, particularly targeting female players who traditionally play the game more than men.
The other games making up the top five are blackjack, roulette and slots. Both blackjack and roulette have become popular live online games. The live online casino gambling selection has remained fairly limited, in that not every game translates well to the live environment. Blackjack and roulette have proved the most adaptable, and as well as being played at home via PC, or via mobile, both games are now available to play live via casino TV shows too.
