Lung Cancer Research Foundation Strides for Life Walk Bring out Community to Support Lung Cancer Research

6th Annual 3-Mile Fun Run/Walk Raises over $420,000 for Lung Cancer Research

NEW YORK, Aug. 17, 2011 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- On Sunday, August 14, the Lung Cancer Research Foundation (LCRF) hosted the 6th Annual Strides for Life 3-mile run/walk in Southampton. The purpose of this walk was to raise funds for critical lung cancer research. Over 700 people participated in the race, and all funds raised will go directly to important lung cancer research.

The Strides for Life run/walk took place at Lake Agawam on Sunday morning. Race participants included teams honoring lung cancer patients, lung cancer survivors, friends and family.  Joe Buckheit, a lung cancer survivor cut the ribbon to start the race, and the event's Mistress of Ceremonies was Co-Anchor of FOX 5 News Rosanna Scotto. LCRF Founder and President Laurie Carson was present, along with event co-chairmen Nancy Y. Hebert, Wendy Routh, Kimberly Kravis Schulhof, Lynne Tarnopol, and Rose-Ann Weinstein.

"Despite the rainy weather, we are pleased that so many joined us for this year's Strides event.   People don't stop having lung cancer because of the weather, so it was gratifying to see the dedication of so many participants and supporters.  In a way, the rain galvanized the spirit of the event. We truly appreciate the participation and generous donations in support of lung cancer research," said LCRF Founder and President Laurie Carson. "These donations will go directly to scientific investigators who are looking for better treatment options, and ultimately a cure, to improve the lives of those people living with lung cancer."

• Male 18 and over: Angel Rojas (16:47)
• Female 18 and over: Danielle Messinger (19:01)
• Male Under 18: Nick Ellenoff (15:13); he also had the top time overall
• Female Under 18: Laetitia Krisel (21:26)
• Fastest Team: Team JPS

Since inception six years ago, Strides for Life has raised more than $2.5 million to fuel research across the country. Dollars raised have gone directly to support research into prevention, new approaches for diagnosis, and disease management. Strides for Life is the largest New York area fundraising race for lung cancer research.

Lung cancer is the leading cause of cancer deaths in both men and women. Despite the fact that approximately 160,000 people die each year because of lung cancer(1), lung cancer research remains drastically under-funded, when compared to other major cancers such as breast, colon or prostate cancer(2).
