Lynn University pilots new career prep course
Program designed with the Greater Boca Raton Chamber of Commerce exposes future leaders to local business and civic communities
BOCA RATON, Fla., Jan. 8, 2015 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Lynn University's January Term is offering its first-ever "Future Leaders of Tomorrow" course to expose students—also known as future leaders—to the Boca Raton business and civic communities. The three-week long competitive education program, designed in partnership with the Greater Boca Raton Chamber of Commerce, provides 15 students with real-world experiences and career mentoring assistance.
"It is our responsibility as educators to showcase the opportunities available in our community," said Barbara Cambia, executive director of the Hannifan Center for Career Connections at Lynn. "This course is designed to help students learn about the greater Boca Raton community. It will also help them discover the power of networking, become more proactive about life after college and understand that they do not need to travel far from Lynn to establish a solid occupational foundation."
The pilot course offers various career-oriented modules, from resume and cover letter formatting, LinkedIn profile development and mock interviews, to guidance about appropriate business wear, acceptable headshot framing and behavioral assessment insights. In addition, students attend four field trips to a handful of local businesses, organized by volunteer day planners with presentations from local business leaders including Mark Mileusnic, chief customer operations officer for National Council on Compensation Insurance, and Charles Deyo, chief executive officer and president of Cendyn.
Three field trips follow themes of civic and community, economic development, and entrepreneurship. Students visit organizations including ADT Security Services, Boca Helping Hands, the Boca Raton Police Department, Boca Raton Regional Hospital, Boca Resort and Club, the City of Boca Raton, Florence Fuller Child Development Centers, Modernizing Medicine, Office Depot Office Max, Playimage Communications, Rapoport Restaurant Group, the Research Park at Florida Atlantic University, Wyndham Hotels and Resorts, and the YMCA of Boca Raton. A fourth field trip includes a visit to Career Source Florida, a statewide network of career development professionals who help Florida employers find, develop and retain qualified talent.
"This experience is about engagement and opportunity, and we are seeing that Lynn's students are ready for this unique program," says Troy McLellan, president and chief executive officer of the Boca Chamber. "We hope the course helps students identify the vast number of career opportunities right here in Boca Raton and South Palm Beach County. And we are confident that—at a minimum—the program will help students understand the power of exposure and networking, and will help local businesses recognize the talent that exists in their own backyard."
To participate, students were required to complete a competitive application process including an essay and pre-requisite courses. Pending the pilot's results, Lynn hopes to expand the Future Leaders of Tomorrow program, making it an integral part of Lynn's undergraduate curriculum.
