SAN FRANCISCO, March 30, 2016 /PRNewswire/ -- MailTime today launched an Android version of its messenger app that makes email as quick and easy as texting. Named one of the Apple App Store's Best of 2015, MailTime has hit over 1 million downloads since debuting in 2014. Compatible with any major email service, MailTime is now available for free on the App Store and Google Play.
MailTime is a mobile app that blurs the lines between instant messaging (IM) and emailing. Unlike conventional IM platforms that require people to download the same app, MailTime relies on email protocol. Thus, MailTime users can communicate with any email address – the recipient doesn't need to have the app. MailTime's content parsing engine simply cuts out annoying metadata and display emails in bubbles that resemble IM.
"MailTime is the only open platform for mobile communication," said Heatherm Huang, co-founder and CEO of MailTime. "Even if your mom uses an @aol.com account, you can email her via MailTime. People think email is 'broken' or 'dying,' but we believe MailTime can give it a second life."
MailTime debuted on the Startup Battlefield at TechCrunch Disrupt 2014 in San Francisco. Since launching, MailTime has raised more than $3 million in seed funding. The company completed the Y Combinator accelerator program on March 24, 2016. MailTime's other investors include Zhen Fund, Gary Rieschel (Qiming Venture Partners), Crystal Stream (former VP of Engineering, Baidu) and Magic Stone.
Before launching MailTime, Heatherm Huang led Talkbox, the first voice messenger app, which reached 13 million users. This functionality was eventually adopted by major tech companies and is now a feature in most messaging services. Because Talkbox was a closed network, it clashed with other networks and helped fracture the voice messenger world into several incompatible ecosystems. Huang built MailTime on top of an open protocol so it could become as universal as SMS, with maximum market potential.
To begin MailTime, users download the app and log into their email accounts. MailTime prioritizes emails from friends, so users can focus on communication rather than organization. The text bubbles and graphics depict who said what, making multiple recipient emails as easy to follow as a group chat on an instant messenger.
