Manufacturing of Machinery for Mining, Quarrying and Construction in South Africa 2016
LONDON, Jan. 30, 2017 /PRNewswire/ -- The Manufacture of Machinery for Mining, Quarrying and Construction: Data from the Construction and Mining Equipment Suppliers' Association (CONMESA) shows that a total of 5,718 items of mining and construction equipment were sold during 2015. These were procured from local original equipment manufacturers (OEMs), global OEMs with manufacturing facilities in South Africa, and importers and distributors of international brands. South African manufacturers often act as dealers for global manufacturers, enabling them to offer imported machines that complement their own range of products.
Challenging Conditions: South Africa has dropped down the ranking of the most competitive manufacturing countries according to the Deloitte Global Manufacturing Competitiveness Index released during August 2016 and analysts believe it likely that local manufacturers will find it increasingly difficult to compete with distributers of imported machinery. With the sector heavily dependent on global growth in GDP, commodity prices and the health of the mining, building and construction sectors, machinery manufacturers are currently experiencing subdued demand for their products.
Investment and Innovation: Research and development is important to manufacturers of capital equipment and constant innovations are being made towards lowering the power consumption of machines, raising production capacity and making machines more lightweight. A great deal of product development centres on the global trend of reducing engine emissions. Currently, the focus is on reducing nitrogen oxides, hydrocarbons and particulate emissions, but in future the focus will move to CO2 emissions.
