MARCHESI FRESCOBALDI INTRODUCES GORGONA 2025 TO THE U.S. MARKET

The latest vintage of Gorgona arrives in the United States, continuing a 14-year project that combines winemaking with professional training and social reintegration

GORGONA, Italy, Sept. 22, 2026 /PRNewswire/ -- Marchesi Frescobaldi announces the arrival of Gorgona 2025 in the U.S. market, marking the 14th vintage of the winery's distinctive wine produced on Gorgona Island, Europe's last remaining active island penitentiary. The wine is the result of a partnership between Marchesi Frescobaldi and the Gorgona Penitentiary Institute that began in 2012, providing inmates nearing the end of their sentences with hands-on experience in viticulture and winemaking alongside Marchesi Frescobaldi's agronomists and winemakers.

Since its founding, the Gorgona project has centered on a small vineyard overlooking the Tyrrhenian Sea. Participants work in the vineyard and cellar throughout the growing and winemaking seasons, developing practical skills that can support their reintegration into the workforce and society. The project began with the restoration of one hectare of vineyard on the island, with Marchesi Frescobaldi subsequently adding another 1.3 hectares over the years.

The vineyard, now spanning 2.3 hectares, is situated within a natural amphitheater overlooking the sea. Iron-rich soils, abundant sunshine and constant maritime breezes create a harmonious environment for Vermentino and Ansonica, which produce a distinctive expression of the Tuscan Archipelago marked by freshness, salinity and a pronounced sense of place.

The Gorgona 2025 displays a brilliant straw-yellow hue with subtle golden highlights. The bouquet offers a distinctly maritime expression of Vermentino and Ansonica, where the warmth of the Mediterranean sun meets the freshness of the sea breeze. Aromas of Mediterranean macchia—including thyme, sage and helichrysum-intertwine with floral notes of chamomile, acacia and jasmine. Citrus and yellow and white stone fruits emerge alongside delicate tropical nuances that evolve in the glass. On the palate, the wine is fresh and sapid, with a long, persistent finish that reflects its coastal origins.

The 2025 growing season was characterized by a dry autumn, a cooler winter with frequent, well-distributed rainfall and intense thunderstorms in March. Vermentino budded in early April, followed by Ansonica in mid-April. A mild spring and a sudden heat wave in June, moderated by the island's maritime influence, supported regular vine development and excellent vine health. A cooler, breezier summer, punctuated by sporadic showers, allowed the grapes to progress toward full ripeness. Harvest took place in September under cool, sunny conditions, allowing the grapes to reach full phenolic maturity.
