Martin Tuchman inducted into NCE 100 Alumni Hall of Fame at Newark College of Engineering at NJIT

KINGSTON, N.J., March 11, 2019 /PRNewswire/ -- Martin Tuchman has been inducted into the NCE 100 Alumni Hall of Fame of Newark College of Engineering (NCE) at New Jersey Institute of Technology (NJIT).  The inaugural NCE 100 group of eleven (11) was inducted in March 2019 to celebrate the College's centennial.  To be included among the distinguished individuals that make up the NCE 100 is to be recognized for a significant contribution with tangible positive effect on society for the profession – through authorship and composition; high-impact research, discovery or artistry; or major long-term and widely-recognized leadership of organizations and groups beneficial to the public.  Up to ten (10) new members will be elected once every two years by the membership of the NCE 100.

Among the other notables included in the inaugural NCE 100 group were Pierre Ramond, who is credited with initiating the development of Superstring Theory; Ellen M. Pawlikowski, a former United States Air Force General; and Gerard J. Foschini, who held the position of Distinguished Inventor in Bell Laboratories' Wireless Research Laboratory.

In 1962, Tuchman joined the Railway Express Agency (REA) as an automotive engineer.  While at the agency, he worked with the American National Standards Institute and, together with a group of other shipping engineers, developed the current standard for intermodal containers and chassis.  The purpose of the standard was to allow for interchangeability of equipment in each mode of transportation: rail, truck and ship, as well as for structural integrity.  The standard is still in use today.

In 1968, Martin Tuchman and Warren Serenbetz founded Interpool, one of the nation's leading container and leasing corporations. In 1978, TBG Holdings, N.V., an international holding company, acquired Interpool; Tuchman remained as CEO until 1985.  In 1988, Tuchman re-acquired Interpool. He had it listed on the New York Stock Exchange in 1993.  Today the company ranks as one of the top three international leasing companies in terms of net worth, with headquarters in Princeton, New Jersey, and offices throughout the world.

In 1987, Tuchman formed Trac Lease, and developed it into the largest chassis leasing company in the United States, with over 150,000 units operating over the road and in rail service.

Among his many public positions, Tuchman served on the United Nations Business Council; the Board of Trustees and Board of Overseers of NJIT; and the Board of Directors of the Parkinson's Disease Foundation of Columbia Presbyterian Hospital in New York.

In 1995, Tuchman was honored as Entrepreneur of the Year in an awards program founded by Ernst & Young LLP.  In 1996, he was named Alumnus of the Year by NJIT.  On March 3, 2016, NJIT's School of Management was named in his honor the Martin Tuchman School of Management.

Martin Tuchman received a Bachelor of Science degree from New Jersey Institute of Technology (Mechanical Engineering, 1962); and a Master of Business Administration (MBA) from Seton Hall University (1968).  He is chairman and chief executive officer of The Tuchman Group, a firm with holdings in real estate, banking and international shipping.
